Background of the Study
Corporate governance involves the systems, principles, and processes by which organizations are directed and controlled to enhance accountability, transparency, and ethical business conduct. Auditing plays a vital role in strengthening corporate governance by providing independent assurance on the accuracy of financial statements and compliance with regulations (OECD, 2024). In Nigeria, robust corporate governance practices are critical for fostering investor confidence and sustaining economic growth, particularly in large conglomerates like the Dangote Group.
The Dangote Group, as one of Africa’s largest and most influential business entities, is subject to significant scrutiny concerning its governance practices. Through rigorous auditing, the group can ensure compliance with governance standards, improve risk management, and enhance decision-making processes. However, challenges such as regulatory inconsistencies, auditor independence, and the complexity of business operations can affect the effectiveness of auditing in promoting corporate governance.
This study examines the impact of auditing on corporate governance practices within the Dangote Group, providing insights into the role of audits in enhancing governance frameworks in large Nigerian corporations.
Statement of the Problem
The Nigerian business environment has witnessed cases of corporate mismanagement, fraud, and poor governance, undermining public trust in organizational leadership. While auditing is a key mechanism for enhancing corporate governance, its effectiveness is often limited by factors such as inadequate enforcement of audit findings, lack of auditor independence, and weak regulatory frameworks.
Given the prominence of the Dangote Group, understanding how auditing influences its governance practices can provide valuable lessons for other Nigerian corporations. This study addresses the gap in knowledge regarding the interplay between auditing and corporate governance, offering practical recommendations for improving governance standards.
